Around Oughterard

Oughterard is a small Irish village that has alot to offer a visitor. It is situated on the shores of Lough Corrib, nestled at the foothills of the beautiful Connemara mountains, and is built on the Owenriff River which runs through the village. With so many natural environments in close proximaty, Oughterard offers a great base for golfers, fishermen, walkers or anyone that just wants a relaxing break.

Oughterard provides the ideal base to visit local attractions such as Aughnanure Castle, a tower house castle from the 16th century built by the O'Flahertie clan and the Glengowla Mine which was mined for its precious metals of silver and lead. Tours are provided daily at the mines Heritage and visitor centre which also has a rock and mineral shop.

There are many colourful and traditional shops in the village that have everything on offer to suit locals and tourists alike. All items can be purchased here from antiques, fishing gear to souvenir Leprechaun hats!

For those who like fishing, Lough Corrib provides some of the very best fishing in the world. It is well renowned for its quality and quantity of Trout and Salmon and is within easy travelling distance of the village and golf course.

In addition to visiting Kylemore Abbey, Maam Cross and Leenane, we also recommend that you visit Galway which is the regions largest town and only 15 miles from Oughterard. Galway is very much a cosmopolitan town. It is very relaxed, with many traditional pubs and Irish, French, Italian and Asian restaurants. The shopping is also very good!
